EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (AP) — A math teacher from East Bridgewater who has inspired more than a dozen of his former students to follow in his footsteps has been named Massachusetts Teacher of the Year.
Jamil Siddiqui was named the 57th recipient of the award Tuesday by State Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley.
Siddiqui has been teaching at East Bridgewater Junior/Senior High School for 24 years.
Fourteen of his former students are currently math teachers. He has also mentored new teachers and, while department head, helped teachers learn from each other.
He has also never stopped trying to improve. One year he video recorded every one of his classes and reviewed the videos of lessons he felt may not have worked well enough.
Siddiqui automatically becomes the state’s candidate for National Teacher of the Year.
